AI providers and keys

Use LogNorm's models or bring your own keys, choose models and image providers.

LogNorm uses language models to summarise your site, judge keywords, write briefs and drafts, check claims and track what AI assistants say about you. You decide who runs those models: LogNorm, or the providers you already pay for. Everything on this page lives in ConfigureAI providers in the app sidebar.

Only workspace owners and admins can change these settings. Everyone else can see the page but the controls are disabled.

Choose an AI mode

The top of the page has two cards. The one marked Active is the mode your workspace uses for every AI call.

New workspaces start on LogNorm AI. Click the other card to switch; the change applies to the next AI call. If Bring your own keys isn't part of your plan, the card is disabled and the provider list shows a BYOK not in plan badge. See pricing for which plans include it.

Some costs don't depend on your mode

Search data and page crawling are always metered in credits, because LogNorm pays for them whichever mode you pick. So is each job's small platform fee. Some ranking and screening decisions use LogNorm's own decision model, which doesn't use your keys and is billed in fractions of a credit. The details are in Credits and billing.

Supported providers

You can connect any of nine providers, and as many of them as you like. The table shows the model LogNorm uses for each tier when you don't pick one yourself.

Providers marked with live citations can answer with live, cited web sources, which LogNorm uses to find fresh facts and sources while researching a draft. AI visibility doesn't use these keys: it asks the real ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, so it works without any key.

Add a provider key

  1. Open AI providers

Go to ConfigureAI providers. If no AI is set up yet, the banner at the top of the app ("Connect an AI provider") links here too.

  2. Create a key with your provider

Each provider card links to the provider's own key page. Create a key there and copy all of it.

  3. Paste it

Click Add key on the provider's card, paste into API key and save. LogNorm rejects keys shorter than eight characters or containing spaces, which usually means a partial paste.

  4. Check the result

LogNorm verifies the key straight away by listing the provider's models (Perplexity has no model list, so it sends a one-token request instead). You'll see Key verified, or "The provider rejected this key" with the provider's error.

  5. Switch the mode

Select Bring your own keys if it isn't already active. Your keys are only used for writing and analysis in this mode.

The first key you verify becomes the default provider. If your workspace had no working AI when you added websites, LogNorm re-runs site analysis for them once the first key is verified, so the summary, audience and keyword seeds (and your Growth Plan) fill in.

Key status and usage

Each provider card shows a status: Valid, Invalid or Unverified, with the last four characters of the key and when it was last verified. It also shows the calls and tokens that provider handled in the last 30 days. Use the verify button to check a key again (for example after topping up your provider account), Replace to paste a new key, or Remove key to delete it.

A key marked invalid is skipped. When you remove the default provider's key, LogNorm moves the default to your oldest remaining key and resets the model choices, and anything that used the removed provider falls back to your other keys.

Fast and quality models

LogNorm sends every AI task to one of two tiers:

  • Fast handles classification and extraction: tagging, sorting, pulling facts out of pages.
  • Quality writes briefs and drafts.

In the Default provider & models card, pick a Default provider from the ones with a key, then choose a model for Fast and for Quality. The pickers list the models your key can use today, read from the provider: LogNorm's Recommended picks first, then All models on your key. The list is refreshed every few hours; Refresh models reads it again now. Custom model id… takes any model id your provider accepts, such as a fine-tune. Leave a tier empty to use the provider's recommended default from the table above.

Providers retire models. When a saved or default model is no longer offered to your key, LogNorm switches that call to a current model of the same tier from your key's list, keeps using it, and the picker marks the old choice so you can pick a new one.

Picking models

A cheap, quick model is usually right for Fast, since those calls are frequent and short. Spend on Quality: it shapes every brief and draft your readers see. Custom ids must be the provider's exact model name. LogNorm checks the format but only your provider can confirm the model exists, so run a test afterwards.

LogNorm uses your default provider, then any other working key. AI visibility doesn't use your keys at all: it reads the answers from the AI products themselves and is billed in credits.

Test the route

The Test the route card sends one tiny prompt through exactly the path real jobs use. Choose the Model tier (fast or quality) and run it. You get back the provider, the model, the route (Your key or LogNorm AI, direct or through your gateway), the round-trip latency, the tokens used and the model's reply.

With your own key the test costs 0 credits. On LogNorm AI it costs the few credits its tokens use. Run a test after you change the default provider, a model or gateway settings.

How your keys are stored

The How your keys are protected card on the page summarises this:

  • Encrypted per workspace. Each key is sealed with AES-256-GCM using a data key unique to your workspace, the moment it reaches our server.
  • Envelope encryption. That data key is itself wrapped by a master key held outside the database, so a copy of the database alone reveals nothing.
  • Decrypted only to call. Keys are decrypted on LogNorm's servers for the instant of a request and never sent to your browser, logs or teammates.
You can't view a key again

After you save a key, LogNorm only ever shows its last four characters. Keep your own copy in a password manager, or create a new key with your provider and use Replace.

Cloudflare AI Gateway

If you use Cloudflare, you can send your own-key traffic through your Cloudflare AI Gateway to get caching, rate limits, logs and spend analytics in your Cloudflare account. It applies only in Bring your own keys mode and is available on some plans; the card shows a lock badge if yours doesn't include it.

  1. Create a gateway in Cloudflare

In your Cloudflare dashboard, create an AI Gateway and note its name.

  2. Fill in the card

In the Cloudflare AI Gateway card, enter your Account ID (the 32-character hex id from your dashboard URL) and the Gateway ID (the gateway's name). Add a Gateway token only if your gateway is authenticated.

  3. Save and test

Save. The card shows Routing on. Run Test the route to confirm calls now go through the gateway.

The token is encrypted like your provider keys. Once stored, the field shows Stored; leave it empty when you save again to keep it. Remove the routing from the same card to go back to calling providers directly.

Image providers

LogNorm can generate a hero image and section illustrations for each article. Image generation is set up in the Image generation card further down the same page, on plans that include AI images. It needs a Google, OpenAI or xAI key (or LogNorm AI, where it provides Google and OpenAI).

ProviderModels
Google GeminiGemini 3.1 Flash Image (default), Gemini 3 Pro Image, and any other image model your key lists
OpenAIGPT Image 1 (default), GPT Image 1 mini
xAI GrokGrok 2 Image

The card has these settings:

  • Model: each model shows a short description. Providers without a key are unavailable.
  • Hero aspect ratio: 16:9, 4:3, 1:1, 3:2 or 21:9, limited to what the chosen model supports.
  • Body images per article: 0 to 4, placed under the most visual sections with alt text and a caption.
  • House style: up to 800 characters added to every image prompt. Start from a preset (Flat editorial, Isometric, Photographic, Minimal line art) or Brand colours, which builds a style from your primary and accent colours. LogNorm always asks for no text, logos or watermarks, which image models tend to garble.
  • Generate images automatically after each draft: when on, a hero plus your body images are added as soon as a draft or refresh finishes. You can always regenerate or upload your own.

Use Try it to generate one sample hero for an article on your site's topic with the current settings, saved or not. The sample is billed like a real image run.

Every image run carries a small platform fee in credits. With your own key the image itself is billed by your provider; on LogNorm AI it is charged in credits at the provider's price.

Below it, Article covers sets the default layout, logo, title and accent colour that frame each generated hero. Covers are covered in Content and the editor.
