What does an SEO competitor analysis tool do?
It compares your site with the sites that compete for the same searches: their pages, their rankings and their keyword coverage. The output should be a short list of things to build or improve, not a wall of charts.
Most startups know their product rivals by name. Fewer know who actually outranks them, which is often a publisher, a review site or an indirect competitor. LogNorm separates the two, because you answer a rival's comparison page differently from a listicle that ranks above you.
How does LogNorm find your real competitors?
It starts from search data, not guesses. Candidates come from the sites ranking for your keywords, from organic overlap with your domain and from earlier suggestions, which are re-checked on every run.
LogNorm then reads each candidate's homepage and judges what it is to you: a direct competitor, an indirect competitor, an adjacent product, a publisher, a directory, a marketplace or not related. Each gets a threat level of low, medium or high, from product overlap and search overlap. Large platforms, social networks and your own sites are never suggested.
When search data yields fewer than four competitors LogNorm is sure about, usually on a new site, it also asks an AI model whom a buyer would compare you with. Those proposals pass the same checks and carry a Market peer badge, so you can tell them from ones found in search.
What does a competitor analysis include?
Every tracked competitor is analysed in full and re-analysed on your schedule. One run covers their pages, their search position and how they position themselves.
| Output | What you get |
|---|---|
| Page inventory | Every URL in their sitemaps and homepage links, with new and buyer-journey pages read in full |
| Page types | Each page classified (comparison, alternatives, integration, use case, pricing and more) so it compares one to one with yours |
| Pages aimed at you | Pages that compare against you by name or are written to win your buyers |
| Keyword gap | Keywords they rank for in your market where you are not in the top 100, with volume, difficulty, intent and their ranking page |
| Organic traffic | Estimated monthly visits from Google search, you against each competitor |
| Positioning | What they sell, to whom, how they position and their differentiators |
| What changed | New pages since the last run, labelled: comparison vs you, alternatives page, pricing change, new feature, new integration |
How do competitor gaps become work?
LogNorm turns the gaps into moves on your backlog, ranked against everything else you could do this week. You don't have to read a report and translate it into tasks.
- Gap keywords are grouped into articles one page could rank for, up to five article moves per analysis, with brand and low-volume searches dropped.
- A You vs them comparison move when you have no page comparing the two, and a Their alternatives move when you have no alternatives page.
- Integration or use-case page moves when a competitor has at least two of those pages and you have none.
- A response move when a competitor ships something worth answering, such as a new comparison with you.
Re-running an analysis refreshes a move's evidence instead of creating a duplicate. Gap keywords where the competitor ranks in the top 30 also land in Keywords as suggestions for you to target or skip.
Who are you really up against in search?
Usually more than your product rivals. LogNorm takes every site ranking for your targeted and suggested keywords and sorts it into a kind, so you see the whole field you compete in.
The kinds are direct competitors, indirect competitors, publishers and blogs, review sites, directories, forums and Q&A, marketplaces and platforms, and docs and references. A bar shows each kind's share of rankings on your keywords, and each card lists the top sites with how many of your keywords they rank for and their average position.
If review sites own half your keywords, the answer is getting listed, not out-writing them. If direct competitors rank where you don't and you aren't tracking them, the panel says how many and offers Track. Refresh re-classifies from cached data without buying new search results.
How do you keep up with competitor changes?
Schedule competitor analysis daily, weekly or monthly, and LogNorm compares each competitor's pages with the previous run. New pages appear in What changed with what they signal.
Changes worth a response are marked so, and the significant ones become moves with a link to them, such as answering a competitor's new comparison with you. The first analysis is a baseline, so nothing shows as new, and a sudden jump in URLs, such as a newly found sitemap, is treated as a new baseline rather than a burst of launches. A run that can't start, for example when credits run out, shows the reason and tries again after a full interval.
Can you compare competitors in AI answers too?
Yes. The same tracked competitors are followed through every ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews answer in AI visibility. You see their mention and citation rates next to yours, the prompts they win while you are absent, and the third-party pages that list them and not you.
Brands that keep showing up in answers but aren't on your list are collected with LogNorm's call on whether each competes with you, so a rival you never searched for still gets noticed.
Where is LogNorm not the right competitor tool?
If backlink research is your main job, use a dedicated backlink tool. LogNorm does not analyse competitors' link profiles; it focuses on pages, keywords, positioning and AI answers, and on turning them into work.
Tracking is also capped per website by plan: 1 competitor on Free, 3 on Starter, 5 on Growth and 10 on Scale. Scheduled re-analysis needs a paid plan or trial. See pricing.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find my SEO competitors?
Look at who ranks for the keywords you want, not only who sells the same product. LogNorm's Discover competitors does this from search data in about a minute and tracks the ones it is sure about.
What is a keyword gap?
Keywords a competitor ranks for that you don't. LogNorm lists them per competitor in your market, tags brand searches, and groups the rest into article moves.
How often should I run competitor analysis?
Weekly or monthly suits most startups. Daily on several competitors uses credits quickly, so pick the slowest cadence that keeps you current.
Can I add a competitor that LogNorm didn't suggest?
Yes. Add any domain by hand; it is tracked and analysed straight away, within your plan's competitor limit.
Does LogNorm show competitor traffic?
Yes, as an estimate of monthly visits from Google search, shown against your own once an analysis finishes.
Does LogNorm analyse competitors' backlinks?
No. It covers pages and page types, keyword gaps, estimated traffic, positioning, changes and AI answers. If links are your main lever, use a dedicated backlink tool alongside it.
