What is a Google AI Overview?
An AI Overview is the AI-written summary Google puts above its normal results for some searches. It answers the question in a paragraph or a list and links the pages it drew on.
For a buyer, that summary is often the whole first impression of a category. If the overview names three tools and cites three articles, those are the brands and pages that get read first, whatever ranks in position one below it.
How does LogNorm track AI Overviews?
LogNorm runs each prompt as a normal Google search from your market's country, in your market's language, and reads what comes back. It records the overview's text, the pages it cites and the top results Google ranked underneath it.
- Add the searches
Add prompts the way a buyer types them, or let LogNorm suggest prompts from your positioning, topics and competitors, phrased without your name.
- Run them
Run now, or let the schedule run them daily, twice a week, weekly (the default) or monthly.
- Read each result
Each search shows whether an overview appeared, whether it mentions you, whether it cites your page, and which competitors it names.
- Act on it
Findings become learnings, and Create move puts one on your weekly plan, ranked against your other work.
What happens when Google shows no AI Overview?
LogNorm records exactly that: Google shows no AI Overview for this search. Opening the prompt lists the top results Google showed instead.
A search without an overview is not counted as an answer, and it is not counted as you being absent. It is left out of your mention, citation and recommendation rates, so those rates describe only the overviews Google actually showed. The Overview tab reports how many searches had no overview next to the other numbers. Whether an overview appears can change between runs, so every run checks again.
Mentions or citations: what should you track?
Track both, separately. A mention means the overview names your brand in its text; a citation means one of your pages is among its sources. LogNorm never merges them into one number.
| Outcome | What happened | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Mentioned and cited | The overview names you and links your page | Keep that page current |
| Mentioned, not cited | It names you but sources other sites | Make your own page the evidence: a clear, quotable answer |
| Cited, not mentioned | Your page informs the answer without naming you | Make the case for your product on that page |
| Absent | Neither named nor cited | See who is there and which pages Google cited for them |
Each mention also gets a type: top pick, recommended, neutral, alternative or negative. Types are LogNorm's call, shown with a confidence, and a dashed chip means it is less than 60% sure.
How do you get cited in AI Overviews?
Give Google a page that answers the search directly and is easy to quote, then make sure Google can crawl and index it. The tracker tells you which searches to work on and which pages already win them.
- Open the Sources tab to see the pages Google cites for each prompt, by kind: listicles, comparisons, reviews, forum threads, docs.
- Check You're missing from these for cited third-party pages that name competitors and not you.
- Run the GEO audit on your own page for answerability, structured data and crawler access.
- Ship the change, then let the Impact tab compare the linked prompts before and after.
Our guide on how to get cited in Google AI Overviews covers the page-level changes in detail.
How do you see AI Overview changes over time?
Open Historical runs and pick Google AI Overviews. Each row is a prompt and each column a day, most recent first, and each cell shows whether the overview named you and how, and whether it cited your page.
A dot means the prompt wasn't asked that day. Click a cell to read that day's overview in full. Show the last 7, 14, 30 or 90 days with answers, and Export CSV for one row per prompt and day with whether you were named, your rank among the brands and whether you were cited. Days are in UTC, and when a prompt ran twice in a day the last answer is shown.
How does AI Overview tracking connect to the rest of your SEO?
It feeds the same plan as your keyword, audit and Search Console work, so an AI Overview gap competes for this week's time with everything else. You don't need a second tool or a second backlog.
- Learnings such as Get listed, Pages to build and Cited, not named become moves ranked in your Growth Plan.
- Content briefs pull the live Google results, including any AI Overview, before the draft is written.
- Targeted keywords keep their own position tracking from Search Console and a weekly Google check.
- The Impact tab links every published page to the prompts it was meant to affect and compares overviews before and after.
Overviews take days to weeks to pick up a new page, so publishing doesn't trigger a check. Each scheduled run adds answers on the after side, and a comparison built on few answers is labelled a small sample.
Do you need more than Google AI Overviews?
If your buyers also ask ChatGPT or Gemini, yes. The same prompt can earn a citation in one engine and nothing in another.
LogNorm asks each prompt in Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Gemini by default, and you can pick engines per prompt. For share of voice and competitor rates across all three, see the LLM rank tracker. Tracked prompts depend on your plan: 10 on Starter, 50 on Growth and 250 on Scale, with add-on packs of 50.
Frequently asked questions
Can I see AI Overview data in Google Search Console?
Search Console doesn't give you the overview's text or the pages it cites. An AI Overview tracker runs the search and reads the overview itself, which is how LogNorm records citations and mentions per prompt.
Why does an AI Overview appear one day and not the next?
Google decides per search and changes its mind. LogNorm checks on every run and shows which days had an overview in the Historical runs grid.
Does LogNorm track AI Overviews in my country?
Yes. Searches run from your website's market, one of 94 supported countries, in that market's language.
How often are AI Overviews checked?
Weekly by default. You can switch to daily, twice a week or monthly, or run a check by hand at any time.
Does it count my other domains?
Yes, if you add them. Brand terms and owned sites in Brand identity count as you, and saving them re-checks stored answers at no credit cost.
